The Uniqueness of the Chiropractic Sports Physician

The minutes are rapidly slipping by, the endorphin response is building preparing that uniqueness the body has trained and conditioned for. The muscles must work as though a fined tuned machine. Stimulus-Response-Stimulus-Response; They’ve conditioned and drilled for weeks, months even years awaiting this moment. The commensal relationship of each body entity is critical to obtain the maximum bio-mechanical output (response). The contraction phase and resultant relaxation phase of each muscle, it’s direct relationship to the leverage (bone) system ,must fire from a semi-relaxed or relaxed state. The ability of the muscle fiber to sustain a long duration contraction (power explosion) followed by a smooth transition to the relaxed state allows the athlete to utilize the full potential they have repetitively trained for. Ideally, this is the state of optimum performance.

In this era of sports enthusiasts, the weekend athlete is as gifted and oft times as trained as the professional athlete. Competition is stringent, everyone (team) is capable of winning at any given point in time. It is therefore fitting to surmise that the team that fields the healthiest players—wins. We realize there are numerous variables that muddle this equation, yet this does indeed set the foundation. It is therefore a must to not only train properly but to also present yourself in the optimum bio-mechanical state. The role of the Chiropractic Sports Physician.

The Chiropractic Sports Physician’s approach to an athlete consists of two phases.

Phase I: Pre-competition Exam and Treatment
The first phase is unique to the sports model as the Chiropractic Sports Physician detects any condition which is a deviation from the acceptable norm for that body’s bio-mechanical standards that would hinder performance. Secondly, provide information that will enhance that performance. In the case of minors, evaluate the muscular maturity for that specific event. Thirdly, provide the opportunity for the athlete to review any health concerns ( as this oft times is the only opportunity for the athlete to see a physician ). Fourth, detect any condition that would increase probability to injury. A high emphasis during this phase consists of soft tissue techniques which enhance bio-mechanical efficiency.

Phase II: Post-competition Exam and Treatment
The Phase II: Post-competition Exam and Treatment spotlights “the show is over”. In this phase of treatment the physician follows up all pre-event treatment with the post event assessment. The doctor re-examines the injury site, evaluates the taping procedures and ascertains the “future clearance” issues. This is the appropriate time to address training issues and to outline rehabilitation programs that would be compatible for the athlete to promote compliance. In this phase of treatment an osseous adjustment is utilized. In this manner the discomfort, should there be any, does not effect the bio-mechanical productivity. It enhances the athlete down the long road of rigorous training.

The Chiropractic Sports Physician is rapidly becoming the choice physician for team as well as individual sports. The training of the Chiropractic Sports Physician is all encompassing. The knowledge of when and where to refer for specialized care takes into consideration the best interest of the athlete. There are no competitive factors amongst the professionals as each physician clearly understands their role in caring for the athlete. The uniqueness of the Chiropractic Sports Physician’s protocol establishes, then bonds the trust between the doctor and the athlete which in turn enhances the athletes performance.

The bottom line? The team that fields the healthiest players: WINS. The Chiropractic Sports Physician is the team player.
